Hello, we are Marcela and Carlos and we are addicted to travel.
Unlike many other travellers we are not running away from our 9:00 to 5:00 jobs, we studied something we really like and have been fortunate to get jobs that allow us to practice it and that challenge us every day (Marcela is a Microbiologist and Carlos a Industrial Engineer). Unfortunately, these kind of jobs have a little problem, we usually only get two or three weeks of holiday per year. On the trips that we have done, we have learnt that you need more that two weeks to learn about a city and even more to really appreciate the culture and traditions of a country. That is why for the second time we have quit our jobs and embarked on a long traveling period.
Like many other travellers we have self-diagnosed with the famous travel bug, the one that creates a travel addiction that only allows you to think about your previous, current or future travels. We got bitten by the travel bug on our first trip to Europe in 2010…
But before we get into that let us tell you more about who we are. We are Colombians, born in Medellin a few years ago… in 2000 we went to Canada to study English, and when so many opportunities open up we started to build a life in Toronto. In 2008 Carlos was transfer for work to Calgary, in the other side of the country; so we packed our bags and traveled across Canada on a wonderful road trip.
In Calgary we settled again and spent every weekend exploring the close by mountains.
From here we did our first backpacking trip to Europe, the one that changed our way of seeing the world. After just a couple of weeks in Europe we came back to work, but knowing that we needed to travel with our backpacks again for a bit longer. This is how in 2012 we quit our jobs and started to travel without return tickets. We calculated that our savings would last us for a year, so that was the length of time we told our families and friends that we were traveling for. It was an unforgettable trip, but in a way it is a trip that still continues today.
After 11 months on the road we arrived in New Zealand, planning to work a bit to make some money so we could travel back to Canada. But again our plans changed when we found amazing working opportunities, so we settled in Christchurch and lived there for over 3 years. During this time we used every weekend and every holiday to explore this amazing country and everything close by.
But in 2016 our addiction resurface and we again wanted more. This is how the current trip started. This time we told our friends and family that we will be traveling for 2 years but everything can change… we might go back to Colombia, Canada, New Zealand or maybe another country that opens up its doors for us to explore it for a little while.
We have always written a bit about our travels and Carlos has a huge photo library, but it isn’t until now that we are putting it all together and sharing it all with you… we hope you enjoy it as much as we have and that you come to travel with us for a bit.
